What could be more fun than observing amazing objects through powerful telescopes by the seaside? Bring your friends or family to astronomy night and find out! Before it’s even dark our first target will be a lovely 10-day waxing gibbous moon. Craters, mountains and ancient lava plains are amazing sights. As the twilight fades into night, we will take a quick look at our nearest neighbor planet Venus, which will appear as a brilliant “star” in the West. Next, we will shift our focus to my favorite planet Saturn and its dazzling ring system and moons. Seeing Saturn with your own eyes is a treat not to be missed.
Late in the evening we’ll ramble amongst some the best deep-sky sights the summer sky has to offer. If you have never seen the planets or deep space objects through a big telescope, you will be amazed! Many wonders await discovery at the eyepiece of powerful telescopes provided by our hard-working volunteer astronomers. We set up the telescopes next to the Seal Beach pier, right across the street from Bogart's Coffee House.
Seal Beach Astronomy Nights are co-hosted by Bogart's Coffee House and our favorite local astronomy buff, Michael Beckage! If you have a telescope, feel free to bring it to the star party. You don’t have to be an expert and it’s rewarding to share anything you know with someone else. The star parties are great for kids of all ages and best of all provide serious entertainment at an unbeatable price. (Free, that is!)
