STANTON, CA —The Boys & Girls Club of Stanton is raising funds to both replace and upgrade its aging facilities. Now, Stanton city officials have come up with a creative way to help them by matching donated funds from the public by 20-to-1, up to $250,000. Can you lend a helping hand?

The 40-year-old original building needs upgrades from the playground to the plumbing, officials say. The Boys & Girls Club organization which has helped kids have a home away from home with the help of mentors is now in much need of community support.

Club Director Elvin Campbell says it's like "winning the lotto" for the club.

“If we can get to $250,000, that will make it the largest monetary donation that we have ever received," Campbell says. "The money would go toward a brand new, interactive learning space and play space for our children and also go toward much-needed fixes and upgrades for our bathrooms.”

The Boys & Girls Club playground has seen better days. The bathrooms are part of the 40-year old original building, with toilets that don’t function and require monthly plumbing repairs, according to Campbell.

City officials, like City Manager Jarad Hildenbrand, heard of the club’s plight and looked into ways to help.

Funding from the American Rescue Plan Act to be used to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic, is perfect to help the club, as it includes providing direct assistance to nonprofits.

Mayor David Shawver spoke during a recent city council meeting, suggesting that they both help the club and involve the community.

“During the pandemic, the Boys & Girls Club became a crucial resource for working parents, offering a safe haven for children and teens," Shawver said. "They serve more than 1,000 children every year and are certainly an organization worthy of supporting. Every dollar will help, especially because that will be multiplied times 20, so your donation will be even more impactful.”
