Police said driver smashed struck four pedestrians in Los Alamitos before crashing into the bank building on Wednesday afternoon.

LOS ALAMITOS, CA — Five pedestrians were critically injured Wednesday afternoon after they were struck by a car, fire officials said. The driver, 30, was also injured. Fire officials said the silver sedan left the road unexpectedly before hitting the group of four. The driver continued driving into a bank sign and ended up smashing into the Los Alamitos Bank.

"The pedestrians and the driver were all transported to the hospital with critical injuries," Orange County Fire Authority Captain Larry Kurtz said.

The intersection of Ball Road and Bloomfield Street was temporarily closed following the dramatic collision. Drivers were asked to avoid the area. Los Alamitos police officials are currently investigating the cause of the crash. Police did not give an estimate of when the busy intersection would reopen.
