Crystal Cathedral's 'Hour of Power' Televangelist Robert H. Schuller in Critical Condition

Robert H. Schuller, 88, is hospitalized in critical condition and hasn't eaten for days. His family says he is resting peacefully.

Televangelist Robert H. Schuller, the 88-year-old founder of the Crystal Cathedral Ministries, was in critical condition in a Los Angeles-area nursing home today and not expected to make it through the week, according to family members.

His daughter-in-law, Donna Schuller, told the Orange County Register that the reverend’s condition has been deteriorating since he had an exploratory procedure in January to examine his digestive tract.

Schuller was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in 2013 but has not been undergoing chemotherapy or radiation treatments since his wife, Arvella Schuller, died in February 2014, the register reported. Earlier this year, family members said they were pleasantly surprised with his “amazing” recovery despite the absence of treatment.

Donna Schuller told the Register that her father-in-law is not on life support and is breathing on his own, but he is extremely weak because has not “eaten for several days.”

He is asleep most of the time, but seems to be at peace, Donna Schuller said.

“He doesn’t seem to be in pain,” she said. “He’s had a wonderful life and he’ll pass gracefully.”

She added that succumbing during the holy Easter week would be a fitting exit for her father-in-law.
