Freeway Closures On 5 Freeway Delay Traffic Overnight In January
CalTrans engineers are closing the 5 freeway both directions this week for improvements in the median. Check traffic after 9 p.m. all week.

LOS ALAMITOS, CA — If you are heading north toward Los Angeles, consider alternate travel plans as CalTrans has issued a total shutdown of the 5 Freeway northbound, starting Tuesday evening. Caltrans engineers need to close both directions of the Santa Ana (5) Freeway between Los Angeles and Orange County during the overnight hours this week, a spokesperson said.
The freeway will be closed to all vehicles between the San Gabriel River (605) Freeway and Norwalk Boulevard to allow contractors to install shoring in the freeway median. The freeway is being widened and rebuilt between the 605 and the Orange County line, a $1.9 billion series of projects that will replace a freeway built in the early 1950s.
Starting Tuesday evening, lanes will gradually be closed until all lanes are blocked, on southbound traffic lanes at 11 p.m. and on the northbound side by midnight.

The 605 will see its transition ramps to the southbound 5 close at about 9 p.m. Tuesday evening, Wednesday and Thursday.
The closures will also occur Wednesday and Thursday evenings.

All lanes will be reopened by 5 a.m. the next day, Caltrans officials said.
Although detour signs will be up in the area, the best detour will be on the 605 and 91 freeways, officials said.
