Hill Fire: 17k Evacuate Thousand Oaks, Ventura, Camarillo; MAP

Strike teams headed north Friday to battle the Hill Fire. Mandatory evacuations are still in place for more than 17,000 residents

VENTURA, CA — The Hill Fire, which began Thursday afternoon, was estimated to have burned 4,500 acres and is 15-percent contained as of late Friday night.

Though a larger estimated acreage was reported at the last briefing with dying winds, the aircraft were able to fly overhead and get a more accurate measurement on the breadth of the blaze. Forward progress has been halted in some areas, and firefighters continue to build and protect those containment lines in some areas, according to the Ventura County Fire Department.

Approximately 900 firefighters and resources will continue dedicated work on the blaze.

All evacuation orders remained in effect Friday evening, Nov. 9 as of 6 p.m. for areas of Camarillo, Ventura, Thousand Oaks, and Point Mugu.

"We're making good progress on the Hill Fire, and we are very optimistic," Ventura County Fire Chief Mark Lorenzen said.

The state of California continues to be under a red flag warning until at least 10 p.m. Friday. Acting Governor Gavin Newsom has declared a state of emergency in Los Angeles and Ventura Counties.

According to a unified command, the focus of the firefight remains structure defense and "life safety."

Thursday night, the fast-moving fire jumped the 101, and firefighters "couldn't even get in front of the fire, it was all about getting people out of the area," Richard Macklin, Ventura County Fire Department information officer said. "We were not even engaging the fire at some point because of the wind event."

Since Thursday, strong winds gusted between 30-50 miles per hour in the area, hampering the air attack on the fire. The area continued to experience "extreme fire behavior" and though winds were expected to die down Saturday, the National Weather Service expects gusts to pick up again on Sunday and firefighters will "remain vigilant" Lorenzen promised.

Air quality in the area and downwind remained poor, and residents were advised to "move to areas of clear are" if you suffer respiratory issues.

On Friday, the Hill F fire burned on both sides of the 101 Freeway, in the Hill Canyon area--where the fire began, and across the freeway in the Newbury Park area.

Once it crossed the freeway, it burned into the "burn scar" of the Springs Fire, slowing it down significantly. The southern edge has stopped north of Portero Road and West of Cal State University Channel Islands, they said.

Firefighters continued with structure protection, where it was safe. The winds continued to hamper progress with creating containment, Macklin said.

Evacuation orders have remained unchanged since 2 p.m. Friday and include:

Point Mugu Naval Base, Camarillo Springs, Vallecito Trailer Park, California State University Channel Islands, Dos Vientos, and the South Coast area.

Malibu evacuated Friday morning due to the nearby Woolsey Fire.
