Monday Essentials: Controversy, Surf, Chills, and Awesome Summer Camp

Here’s what you need to know for the week ahead:

Hot Topics: Tables on the Beach, Vacation Rentals, and High Density Housing: Take your pick of hot topics ― the Seal Beach City Council will tackle three of them at Monday’s City Council meeting.

During closed session, the council will discuss a lawsuit filed by Robert and Nancy Beck, Seal Beach property owners affected by the city’s recent ban on new vacation rentals. During open session, the council will consider hiring a consultant to do an environmental analyses on controversial zoning for high density housing in Seal Beach.

Lastly, the council will consider a law prohibiting beachfront residents from keeping picnic tables and seating on the sand. Open session starts at 7 p.m. at City Hall, 211 8th Street.

Surf’s Up: The Vans U.S. Open of Surfing swims along in Huntington Beach through Sunday. That will mean a week of fun summer events and miserable traffic on PCH in Huntington Beach. Monday's events include a screening of the “The Goonies'' and Round 1 of the men's competition. For a schedule of events, click here.

Monday is Hammock Day. How many of you actually have hammocks at home? Who digs a good nap in the sun? Tell us in the comments. Also, Seal Beachers, have you ever been tempted to put up a hammock on the green belt? Is that even legal?

Sweater Weather? Seriously, we are more than halfway through July and daytime highs are not expected to reach the 70s in Seal Beach throughout the week as patchy fog dominates the forecast. Los Alamitos, on the other hand, will experience mild hints of summer with daytime highs of about 77 through much of the week.

Free Summer Camp! The city of Los Alamitos offers some of the best kids programs you will find anywhere. In fact the city hosts a rare FREE drop-in program, with great supervision, games and even FREE field trips. For children ages 5-15, the program features arts & crafts, caroms, sports, park games, barbeques, and water day every Friday. Also, new this summer, “Club Los Alamitos” includes six free excursions to fun places like the beach, ice skating, and Sky High.

Registration for excursions will be accepted on a first come, first served basis beginning one week prior to the excursion. Transportation by bus is included. The program runs through Aug. 23 from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. There are camps offered at Orville Lewis Park on 3662 Kempton Drive and Little Cottonwood Park on 4000 Farquhar Avenue (Farquhar & Bloomfield).
