Photo Poll: Would You Cross the Picket Line?
Patch asks: If grocery workers strike, will you cross their picket line?
The threat of a grocery worker strike intensified today as stores such as Vons Pavilions on Pacific Coast Highway posted help-wanted signs for temporary workers in case of a labor action.
At the same time, grocery workers rallied in Los Angeles on Tuesday afternoon, stressing that they do not want to go on strike but that they will if they don't believe they are receiving fair labor offers from the owners of Ralphs, Vons and Albertsons. Last week, more than 90 percent of the 62,000 grocery workers voted to authorized a strike, a move that the chains called a "common tactic in negotiations'' that does not necessarily mean a strike will be called.
While negotiations between the two sides will resume Monday, many residents remember the six-month-long strike of 2003-04 that forced shoppers to cross picket lines or find alternative grocers. Patch asked shoppers from Seal Beach, Los Alamitos and Rossmoor what they plan to do if a strike is called.
