Picture of the Day: Triggerfish Happy

Local fisherman recently caught a rare sight off the coast of Long Beach: the triggerfish, an unusual looking fish more commonly found in subtropical waters and coral reefs.

Rick Feeney from the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County encourages people to snap a shot when the come across unusual specimens such as the triggerfish hanging out in the cool waters off our coastline. And that is exactly what Patch reader John Boyle did when he spotted one at Lover's Cove, Catalina at about 15 feet deep.

Boyle told Patch fishing columnist Philip Friedman that he’s been spotting the finescale triggerfish since the mid-1990's in the Catalina waters.

On the rare occasions they can be found in local waters, however, scuba divers might want to keep their distance. They have a strong jaw designed for crushing shells and are known to behave aggressively when protecting their eggs.
