Power Boat Rams UCI Crew Team
UC Irvine women's crew team escaped major injuries today when a power boat split their boat in half.
A power boat crashed into another boat used by a UC Irvine women’s crew team today in Newport Beach, but the most serious injury was a possible broken ankle, authorities said.
A power boat with four men going out to fish ran over the UCI boat carrying nine women practicing in the harbor about 7:40 a.m., according to Orange County sheriff’s Lt. Jeff Hallock.
The collision split the crew boat in half, but everyone escaped serious injury, Hallock said.

Investigators suspect the crash was due to inattentiveness, Hallock said.
