UPDATE:
A campus lock-down at California State University, Long Beach Tuesday was a false alarm, officials say. Two students saw what they thought was a gun and alerted campus police, according to Rick Gloady, the university’s spokesman.

The subsequent investigation revealed that the students had apparently mistaken a cell phone for a weapon, he said.

The initial emergency alert went out at around 3:30 p.m. warning people of a possible armed suspect on campus and urging people to evacuate. Shortly after 4 p.m., the all-clear was issued.

Long Beach Police was notified and assisted campus police in the investigation, Gloady said.

The incident was not related to an active-shooter drill held at the campus earlier in the day, he said.

The primary focus of that drill was to test the Cal State Long Beach’s Student Health Center’s ability to perform triage in the field, according to the university’s press release.

The scare prompted officials at the college to put out an alert about an armed person on campus in the area of Palo Verde Avenue and Parking Lot 9, according to the emergency alert.

Campus officials told people to seek shelter or evacuate the area. If unable to evacuate, they were advised to lock and blockade doors, close blinds and silence cell phones.
