Run Seal Beach Hits $1 Million Milestone

About $1,003,500 has been donated to local community groups, event organizers say.

That's a lot of running. And jogging. And walking.

Run Seal Beach, the organization behind the long-time local charity event, announced Monday night that they had passed their $1 million milestone.

That's $1,003,500 donated to local community groups, to be precise.

 “After 11 years, we have now awarded a total of 351 separate grants,” said Elizabeth Kane, race treasurer, at City Hall. “We have served 102 local nonprofit-based … organizations in 11 years, benefiting tens and tens of thousands of people in the local community.”

“But more than that, in our 11 years we have topped the $1 million mark,” Kane said to cheers and applause.

At the Monday meeting Marc Loopesko, race director, and Seth Eaker, event public relations director, held up a giant check representing how much had been given back to Los Al, Seal Beach and Rossmoor over the past 11 years.

As for this year's, the 2013 run raised $177,850 for 83 different organizations, organizers say. Grant awards ranged from $500 to more than $7,500.

This year’s grants were awarded to  a variety of organizations including many groups in the Los Alamitos Unified School District — such as the sports boosters clubs and a school art and music programs– as well as the Los Alamitos Youth Center, the Casa Youth Shelter and the Seal Beach Lions.

At the meeting, Run Seal Beach presented a check to the city of Seal Beach Recreation Department for $14,250 to pay for lane lines and mechnical equipment at the McGaugh Elementary School pool and snow for the community holiday tree lighting event  

They also presented a $5,650 check to the city’s Marine Safety Department to help fund a lifeguard scholarship program, a beach access wheelchair and a CPR training mannequins.

The next Run Seal Beach takes place April 5, 2014.
