Seal Beach Warned To Finish Storm Prepping

A pair of storms next week are expected to be mild, but they usher in a winter rainy season likely to be epic thanks to a historic El Niño.

Residents are being encouraged to monitor the surf and weather conditions and ready sandbags to protect against flooding, according to city and marine safety officials.

SEAL BEACH, CA — With a pair of storms barrelling down on Southern California as early as this weekend, Seal Beach city officials are urging residents to finish their winter rainy season preparation.

The two storms to bring scattered showers all next week aren't expected to produce heavy downpours, but strong El Niño conditions may trigger epic winter storms as the winter wears on.

Residents are being encouraged to monitor the surf and weather conditions and ready sandbags to protect against flooding, according to city and marine safety officials.

To be ready, Seal Beach advises to:

• Have pre-filled sandbags available for immediate use at your home.
• On nights before trash pick-up days, place trash cans 12” away from the curb so
the gutter is not obstructed during rain events. If gutters fill with rushing water,
they can knock over cans and carry garbage down to block storm drain
entrances. Do not park cars in front of the trash cans, so they are accessible for
collection.
• If possible, park your cars in your driveway rather than the street, to protect your
engine and electronics. Engine up towards garage door is safest. This is
especially helpful if you live near areas prone to water pooling, such as College
Park East and Old Town.
• Please, wait to drive in flooded areas until floodwaters recede. Driving on flooded
streets causes wakes to form (even at low speeds) and pushes water up onto
parked cars and into garages.
• Monitor the Seal Beach Police Department's social media outlets (Facebook,
Instagram, and Twitter) for information updates.
• If you see fallen trees or tree branches, call the Seal Beach Police Department
non-emergency line at (562) 594-7232.
