Signing Day: Local Athletes Commit to College Teams

High school senior athletes in Orange County, as well as across the nation, could begin signing NCAA national letters of intent on Wednesday, Nov. 9, in the sports of basketball, baseball, softball, tennis, volleyball, swimming/diving, girls water polo, wrestling, golf, lacrosse, ice hockey, crew and gymnastics

This is the date of the “early” signing period, which will continue through Nov. 16. The “regular” signing period for these sports begins April 11 and continues through May 16 for basketball and Aug. 1 for the other sports.

The signing period for all other sports begin Feb. 1 and concludes on April 1 for football and Aug. 1 for soccer, boys water polo, track and field, cross-country and field hockey. There is no “early” signing period for these sports.

A letter of intent is a written promise by a student-athlete to attend a college or university for one academic year. In return, the school guarantees a one-year athletic scholarship as long as the student is admitted and qualifies for financial aid under NCAA guidelines.

Oral commitments, which can be made at any time, are not binding.

All NCAA Division I and II schools that participate in the program are prohibited from continuing to recruit a student who has signed with another school.
