SEAL BEACH, CA — A 65-year-old man shot his elderly mother in the head before ending his own life in Seal Beach, authorities said Friday.

The incident was reported on Wednesday, Dec. 27 at around 8:30 a.m. after Seal Beach Police officers were dispatched to the 600 block of Ocean Avenue in the City of Seal Beach regarding an unknown trouble call at the home.

An out-of-state relative called SBPD dispatch to report that their brother was "frustrated with providing care for his mother."

When officers arrived, they were unable to reach anyone inside of the home and found an unlocked door before making entry to conduct a welfare check. After entering the home, they found two adults dead in a bedroom.

"Seal Beach detectives learned that the adult son, age 65, was living with his mother, age 84, in the Seal Beach residence," an SBPD news release said. "The mother had recently suffered a temporary medical condition that required constant attention and care."

Neither of the victims were identified by name.

According to authorities, the family was working to coordinate in-home care and had arranged for her son to care for her in the meantime.

On Dec. 27, an out-of-state relative received several phone calls from the son in which he expressed increasing frustration with his inability to care for his mother's condition, police said.

"During the third and final phone call, the relative heard a loud bang and the son indicated that his mother was 'gone,'" SBPD Lieutenant Julia Clasby told Patch.

A firearm was found in the son's hand, police said. Both died of fatal gunshot wounds to the head.

Anyone with more information about the incident was asked to call Sergeant Gibson at (562) 799-4100 ext.1128 or jgibson@sealbeachca.gov.
