Survey: Californians Support Stricter Gun Laws, Gay Marriage - Do You Agree?

Most Californians say illegal immigrants should be able to stay.

They also approve of Gov. Jerry Brown’s job performance and support same sex marriage as well as stricter gun laws.

That's according to a survey released Wednesday by the Public Policy Institute of California.

The annual survey takes a reading of Californians’ opinions on hot
button issues. This year’s findings included:

• 78 percent of those surveyed said immigrants in the U.S. illegally should be able to stay here.
• 61 percent of Californians and 60 percent of voters support Brown’s school funding plan, which includes more money for K-12 education and higher education.
• 55 percent of residents would rather use this year’s budget surplus to pay down debt and build a reserve than restore funding for some social service programs.
• 57 percent of Californians say global warming will threaten their way of life.
• 56 percent of Californians support gay marriage.
• 57 percent of Californians say the government does not do enough to control access to guns. Nearly 90 percent said they supported background checks for all gun buyers.

Surveyors interviewed 1,704 California adult residents for the study.
Interviews were done in English and Spanish. They were conducted on landlines and cell phones from May 14-20.
