We Asked Cortana to Talk Like a Pirate, and This is What Happened

It's Talk Like a Pirate Day, and Cortana is not left out of this fun, if not a bit odd, celebratory day. Here's what she said.

For whatever reason, Sept. 19 is International Talk Like A Pirate Day, and Microsoft is having a bit of fun with Cortana. The normally sweet sounding, effervescent Windows persona assistant gets down and shows off her inner pirate with several fun quips.

International Talk Like a Pirate Day is one of the best known parodic holidays, originally created by John Baur (Ol' Chumbucket) and Mark Summers (Cap'n Slappy), of Albany, Oregon, in 1995. The two proclaimed Sept. 19 each year as the day when everyone in the world should talk like a pirate, and stunningly, the world obliged.

"We have been amazed, thunderstruck even, by the response to Talk Like a Pirate Day. Our timbers have been thoroughly shivered," Baur and Summers stated on their website. Social media sites have the most fun with the irreverent holiday, including Microsoft's Cortana phrasings.

Any time you can get your computer to growl "Arrrr" at you, and threaten to walk the plank, it's a pretty good day in this journalist's opinion. On the Talk Like a Pirate website, you can learn how to talk like a German Pirate, a Dutch Pirate or even pick up a few "pirate pick up lines" for use later at your local pub, ale house, or wherever pirates go to wind down their work day.

Where's the best place to eat on Talk Like a Pirate Day? Try Long John Silver's, of course.
