Los Altos' Spencer Fletcher Drives Well at U.S. Amateur in Wauwatosa
With play like this, ASU senior may have a lot of options in the future.

Spencer Fletcher said he has no idea what he’s going to be doing with his life when he graduates from college in a year.
With the way he’s golfing at the U.S. Amateur, though, Fletcher will not be at a loss for options. Buoyed by a hot driver, Fletcher shot a two-under 68 at , placing him in a tie for 21st after the first round of stroke play.
“I hit my driver really well, was hitting that in the fairway, and whenever I hit that in the fairway, I could attack the pins, because they were nice to us and in easy spots,” Fletcher said.

Fletcher started his round on the back nine and came around the turn at even-par. A stretch of three consecutive birdies starting with the par-4 fourth hole propelled Fletcher up the leaderboard. He gave one stroke back after bogeying the ninth hole.
The U.S. Amateur continues Tuesday with a second round of stroke play, after which the field of 312 will be cut to 64 for head-to-head match play competition through Sunday.

“With the greens, you can have some absolutely crazy putts out here. They’re fast, got a lot of ridges,” Fletcher said. “They were really nice to us today and put a lot of pins in the low spots, the easy spots, but they could have set this up near impossible.”
Originally from Los Altos, Fletcher is now a rising senior at Arizona State University. When asked what he loves about the university, Fletcher smiled and proceeded to list off a wide variety of things from the weather to the coaching staff.
And with what he’s doing in the present, no wonder he doesn’t mind not thinking about the future
“College life is so busy with so much class and traveling and golf, it’s a lot of fun,” Fletcher said. “I’m going to focus on this upcoming year and then afterward sit down and figure out what I’m going to do.”
