Reporter's Notebook: Los Altos School District
Happenings and highlights of the latest board meeting, on Monday.

The following is a roundup of short items that came up during the Los Altos School District Board meeting on Monday.
- Santa Rita Elementary and Egan Junior High students were scheduled to be featured on the NBC Nightly News Thursday. Students from these schools are testing a new computer learning system through Khan Academy. Local Mountain View man, Sal Khan, founded Khan Academy to help students of all ages for free. - The board unanimously voted to support an extension of state taxes. The governor is trying to get the votes he needs to place a state tax referendum on the June ballot that would do that. The district has an estimated deficit right now of $4.7-$5.9 million—depending on enrollment figures—according to the district. The push for in the district will be on a May ballot. There is already a $597 parcel tax that was approved several years ago; the total of the two taxes would be $790.
- Parents told school board members that and its parents do not feel they are being treated equally. One parent who had had a child attend both Santa Rita and Bullis Charter schools said the charter school's facilities provided by LASD were not reasonably comparable. Later in the evening, Superintendent Jeff Baier said part of the educational blueprint goals with the district is to strengthen the relationship with the charter school.
