1-Year-Olds Killed In Day Care Pool Fall: Coroner's Office

The Santa Clara County coroner's office identified the victims Tuesday.

SAN JOSE, CA — The children who died Monday after falling in a pool at a home day care in San Jose were just 1 year old, according to the coroner’s office.

The Santa Clara County coroner’s office identified the victims Tuesday as Lillian Hanan of San Jose and Payton Cobb of Hollister.

The tragedy occurred around 9 a.m. in the 1000 block of Fleetwood Drive, where emergency personnel responded after several children fell in the pool, according to police. Three children were taken to hospitals in critical condition, where two were pronounced dead and the third was determined to be in a condition that was not life-threatening, police said.

The police department’s homicide unit and the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office are conducting a joint investigation into the circumstances of the incident, as is protocol for all child deaths, authorities said.

The facility, Happy Happy Home Daycare, was required to adjust its pool fence in 2021, according to KGO, which reported the fence was at least 5 feet tall and made of hard mesh with a self-latching gate.

This year, the day care was cited several times: for failing to clear the criminal record of an employee, for having too many infants in its care, for failing to hold a disaster drill in the past six months, and for failing to document safe sleep every 15 minutes, KGO reported.
