BASEBALL: Los Gatos Falls to Los Altos in De Anza Opener
'Cats errors cost them in league opener; Square off with Eagles again on Friday.
Los Altos 7, Los Gatos 4
The Stars: Los Gatos senior pitcher Matt Murano held down the fort nicely in relief of starting pitcher Jack Larsen. Murano entered the game in the fourth inning and only allowed one earned run the rest of the way. Los Altos scored three times in the third inning and twice more in the seventh to defeat Los Gatos 7-4 in the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League De Anza Division opener for both schools.
Senior outfielder Curtis Breidenthal had two hits, including an RBI single deep into the right field corner in the third. Ken Corey, Vince Augustine and Corey Olivet also knocked in runs during the Wednesday afternoon league bout at Los Gatos High.

The Turning Point: The Los Altos (5-3, 1-0 De Anza) lineup worked the count and continued to put the ball in play throughout the De Anza division matchup. Some days the home field advantage works out for the best. On this day, the ‘Cats infielders had a rough go of it, dealing with the unpredictable infield bounces at Los Gatos High.
Los Gatos (4-2-1, 0-1 De Anza) errors allowed Los Altos to score three unearned runs, which ended up being the difference in the game.

The Quote: “I thought our pitchers did a good job of getting them to hit the ball on the ground,” Los Gatos senior captain Hayden Hibberd said after the game. “Our defense made some errors that hurt us today. We didn’t take care of the outs that we should of. The field is really inconsistent, but we know that and should still be able to make the plays that we need to win.”
What's Next? The two schools will meet up again on Friday afternoon at Los Altos High. Mitch Kehlet is scheduled to start on the bump for Los Altos.
Bottom Line: Los Gatos used patience at the dish to draw a handful of walks, but was only able to scatter four hits on the day. Three errors proved to be costly in the end. The veteran group with high hopes in league will look to rebound Friday against the very same opponent.
