Church Stabbing Attack Suspect Had Jail Release Revoked: Report

Fernando Jesus Lopez's jail had been revoked after he failed to show up for a mandatory hearing for a domestic violence charge.

SAN JOSE, CA — The suspect in a fatal stabbing at a San Jose church earlier this week had his jail revoked at the time of the incident, , The Mercury News reports.

Fernando Jesus Lopez, 32, was arrested on suspicion of killing two people and wounding three Sunday night in a stabbing attack at Grace Baptist Church, where homeless people had been brought to get them out of the cold, according to the report.

Lopez’s jail had been revoked after he failed to show up for a mandatory Aug. 31 hearing for a domestic violence charge according to the report.

He was granted a release after his June 29 arraignment, the report said.

Officers responded at around 8:45 p.m. to the report of a stabbing attack at Grace Baptist Church, near the San Jose State University campus at 484 E. San Fernando Street, police said.

Police said there were no services going on at the church at the time.

The victims were identified as a man and a woman according to The Mercury News report. Three others wounded in the attack are expected to survive, the report said.

San Jose police said on Twitter that the homicides are the city's 40th and 41st this year.
