Coding Studio at Steve and Kate's Camp This Summer

Our camp conforms to kids, not the other way around. Instead of a rigid structure, we

give our campers choice. Instead of teaching kids the typical way, we give them

tools and gentle guidance to help them become self-directed learners, people who

teach themselves. The difference is subtle–and it’s profound. There are a gazillion

ways for kids to design a day at camp. One camper might dive into bread-making and

animation while another flies down a water slide and scores a goal in our inflatable

soccer stadium. It’s up to them.

We don’t expect you to know when or what time you can get your troops to camp.

That’s why our policy is as flexible as you need it to be. You can buy a whole

summer membership or you can purchase as many day passes as you want and

use them whenever. Didn’t use them? No sweat. We’ll give you a full refund for

unused passes. And best of all, you don’t even have to tell us when you’re coming.

Ta-da. Camp just got easier.

NEW THIS YEAR...

JEANS LAB

The Jeans Lab is an activity where kids can make their own jeans and jean shorts. The typical process of making jeans is so complicated that most adults won’t even touch it. But we’ve whittled the process down to simple steps to empower kids with DIY denim. With the help of video tutorials and instructional guides, kids can make and customize their own pair of jeans. We’ve carefully selected a sewing machine that’s heavy duty enough to sew through layers of denim (it’s a serious workhorse!) but is also kid-friendly.
Jeans are one of the most complicated garments to make, and yet the most universal. For a kid to get to wear a piece of clothing that he or she made is incredibly empowering. This self-directed jeans making process will give kids the opportunity to be fashion designers, to sew and customize a unique pair of jeans that they can be proud of.

CODING STUDIO

The coding studio is an activity where kids can learn how to code and use those skills to make their own apps. True to Steve & Kate’s philosophy of self-directed learning, we have created a video game that’s both fun for kids to play and also contextualizes important concepts in programming. Instead of being pushed through a curriculum where they do the same project as everyone else, they can play at their own pace and choose the areas that interest them most. And as they play, they also learn! Those skills can be immediately transferred into the workshop aspect of the studio, where kids can make any app they want.
Unlike many other “learn-to-program” systems, the apps that kids make are real and ready to run on your phone or tablet. They can be shared with anyone you want, and work on both iOS and Android platforms, so the sky really is the limit for these creations. It’s going to be really cool when one of our campers makes an app that goes viral. This activity is no longer reserved for people in (or dropping out of) college!
