Hwy 17 Motorcyclist Fatality: UPDATE

CHP says the man was speeding and his helmet flew off when he struck the back of a car near Lark Avenue. [Breaking]

SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CA – A speeding motorcyclist died when he struck the back of a car and landed on the ground on state Highway 17 in Los Gatos on Tuesday night, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Officers responded to a report of a collision on southbound Highway 17 south of Lark Avenue around 8:10 p.m., CHP officials said.

The motorcyclist, whose name has not yet been released, was traveling by himself at high speeds and struck the rear of a vehicle in front of him, CHP Officer Ross Lee said.

The motorcycle driver was ejected from the bike and landed on southbound lanes, suffering fatal injuries, Lee said. No other injuries were reported.

The motorcyclist was wearing a helmet but it came off when he was thrown off the bike, according to Lee.

Investigators don't suspect drugs or alcohol were involved in the collision, Lee said.

The other driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with officers, according to Lee.
