K9 Sniffs Out South Bay Burglary Suspect

Police established a perimeter and searched 19 backyards for the suspect with help from the CHP helicopter and a K9 unit, Cort.

SUNNYVALE, CA – A K9 unit helped police arrest a South Bay burglary suspect over the weekend, Sunnyvale police said.

Cort helped lead police to the suspect Saturday following an exhaustive search through numerous backyards.

Officers had responded about noon to the 1200 block of Grant Street in Sunnyvale after a resident reported someone was trying break into her home.

The caller said she was hiding inside the residence and gave police a description of the suspect and said "her power had been mysteriously shut off," according to police.

Arriving officers could hear the suspect trying to enter the home and he fled when they confronted him in the backyard, jumping fences of adjoining homes.

Police established a perimeter and searched 19 backyards for the suspect with help from the California Highway Patrol helicopter and a K9 unit.

The suspect, identified as Devyn Coney-Jones of Oakland, was found hiding in a shed and taken into custody with the help of K9 Cort.

After being medically cleared at an area hospital, Coney-Jones was booked into the county jail on residential burglary charges and two felony warrants, one of them for a terms of an alleged parole violation from a robbery conviction.

Police commended the resident for her courage and neighbors in the area for providing updates during the search.
