Los Gatos Chapter of DAR Answers Call to Wave Flags on 9/11

In the early morning hours of September 11, 2020, a group of women from the Los Gatos Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) got together for a special mission, to honor “The Freeport Flag Ladies” and those affected by 9/11.

For 19 years, three patriotic women from Freeport Maine hoisted a flag to honor victims of the 9/11 tragedy. These ladies became known as “The Freeport Flag Ladies” proudly waving their flag every Tuesday, year after year. They retired this practice on Tuesday, September 17, 2019 when Wreaths Across America took the helm and continued the tradition.

Wreaths Across America, a non-profit organization, best known for placing wreaths on the headstones of our nation’s fallen, encouraged people across the nation to participate in flag waving for one minute, at 8:46 am, 9:03 am, 9:37 am, and 10:03 am on September 11.

At 8:46 a.m., On Tuesday, September 11th, 2001, five hijackers took control of American Airlines Flight 11 and flew it into the heart of New York City and the northern facade of the World Trade Center's North Tower (1 WTC).

At 9:03 a.m., five other hijackers flew United Airlines Flight 175 into the southern facade of the South Tower (2 WTC).

At 9:37 a.m., another five hijackers flew American Airlines flight 77 into the western facade of the Pentagon in Arlington County, Virginia

At 10:03 a.m., four hijackers crashed United Airlines Flight 93 into a field in Stonycreek Township near Shanksville, Pennsylvania

The ladies of the Los Gatos Chapter of the DAR heard this call for patriotism. Wanting to follow in the footsteps of “The Freeport Flag Ladies,” the daughters spread the word. Seven members of this national organization got together and waived flags at the given times. They also took time to remember the affected by retelling stories about their experiences of that day. It is so important to REMEMBER, HONOR and TEACH the generation born after 9/11, how hard times can strengthen us as a nation. #FlagsAcrosstheCountry #AmericaStrong
