Fake IDs, ID Printer And Boxes Of New iPhones Found In SMC U-Haul: Police

SAN MATEO, CA — A theft investigation at a San Mateo Verizon store led police to a U-Haul containing numerous fake IDs, an ID card printer, bank cards and boxes of unopened iPhones, authorities said.

San Mateo police responded around 2:05 p.m. Monday to the Verizon Wireless store at 2290 Bridgepointe Pkwy. after receiving a report of a theft.

Police said a man had tried to access a Verizon customer's account and place an unauthorized order for two iPhones before leaving in a U-Haul truck.

Officers located the truck and pulled it over, police said. The driver and only occupant was identified as Jose Simemorales, 30, of New York.

Police arrested Simemorales on suspicion of identity theft and searched the U-Haul.

Inside, officers found numerous fake identification cards, blank ID cards, an ID card printer, bank cards that did not belong to Simemorales and numerous boxes of unopened iPhones, according to police.

Simemorales was booked into the San Mateo County Jail on suspicion of identity theft, displaying a false identification document with intent to defraud and possessing a document-making device with intent to defraud, police said.
