Santa Clara County's reopening plan goes into effect Monday.

SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CA — State officials have reversed course and will allow Santa Clara County to move ahead with reopening plans, The San Jose Mercury News reports.

The county was granted a variance for a reopening plan Health Officer Dr. Sara Cody announced Thursday.

The reopening plan goes into effect Monday according to the report.

The plan was subject to state granting the county a variance allowing for the openings of hair and nail salons, gyms and religious gatherings among other activities, the county said in a news release Thursday.

The county has been granted a variance from the state after its request had been declined over the weekend, the report said.

Santa Clara County CEO Jeff Smith on Monday had expressed dismay at the state’s decision over the weekend denying the county’s request for a variance that essentially shut down its reopening plan, saying “It makes no sense,” according a Mercury News report.

Smith told The Mercury Tuesday that he learned a variance had been granted on the state’s website.

“With regard to the process over the last four days, it’s been confusing — and I can’t say that I understand it — but I’m glad it got resolved,” Smith told The Mercury News.
