Today's riddle: Why did the girl pig break up with the boy pig? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. PCH Cameras Catch 100K Speeding Violations In 9 Days (patch.com) — Malibu drivers are being warned that new automated speed cameras on Pacific Coast Highway have already logged about 100,000 speeding violations in just nine days of testing, mostly in eastern Malibu. The city has pushed the official 60-day warning period to November while it finishes a traffic study and installation work, after which real notices and then fines will follow under a statewide pilot program.
2. California State Parks Awards Emergency Contract for Malibu Pier Repairs (ca.gov) — Major repairs to the end of Malibu Pier are set to start in mid-October, with completion expected by late January 2027, meaning some access will remain limited for a few more months. Funded by a state climate bond, the $2.125 million project will replace damaged pilings and bracing to strengthen the structure while the rest of the pier stays open for fishing, dining, and views.
3. New Soccer Fields Coming to Malibu's Ioki Lot (pepperdine-graphic.com) — Malibu is moving ahead with two new soccer fields at the Ioki Property after a 4–1 City Council vote, aiming to give local kids proper places to practice and play. The fields will replace makeshift practices on baseball outfields, though debate continues over a proposed tow and maintenance yard behind the site and how to fund future amenities on the lot.
4. 5 native plants you can plant this month that will benefit from a wet fall and winter (latimes.com subscription) — Malibu residents can reserve free 50-gallon rain barrels at a Nov. 14 giveaway hosted at Malibu City Hall, part of a broader West Basin program to help locals capture winter rain. The article also highlights five native plants that will thrive in an expected wet El Niño season and lists several upcoming gardening and nature events across Southern California.
5. El Niño Sends World's Most Dangerous Apex Sea Predator to Orange County Beaches (pulptastic.com) — Unusual marine visitors are turning up along the Southern California coast, including a massive hammerhead shark spotted near Malibu Pier in August, the first in the region in nearly a decade. Researchers also report recurring killer whale pods off Newport Beach and rare sea turtle nests in Orange County, all linked to warmer El Niño-driven ocean temperatures that may be shifting marine habitats.
