Campground Murder Suspect Subdued After Courtroom Brawl

Anthony Rauda had to be subdued in court after trying to fight several LA County Sheriff's deputies.

MALIBU, CA — 43-year-old Anthony Rauda had to be subdued after trying to brawl with several county deputies during his most recent appearance in court.

According to NBC Los Angeles, Rauda started to attack after the judge refused to allow him to defend himself without a lawyer. Upon hearing the decision, Rauda went after a nearby deputy and had to be restrained by several others.

Rauda is in court accused of the 2018 murder of Allergan research scientist Tristan Thomas Beaudette. Rauda allegedly shot 35-year-old Beaudette as Beaudette shared a tent with his then 2- and 4-year-old daughters at Mailbu Creek State Park. The girls were not hurt.

Rauda is also facing 10 counts of attempted murder for a series of earlier attacks in and around the park beginning in November of 2016, as well as five counts of second-degree commercial burglary. Two of the attempted murder counts are for Beaudette's daughters. Prosecutors allege Rauda wandered the campgrounds for months, shooting randomly at campers and visitors, wounding at least one other man and hitting several cars. He also allegedly robbed several nearby businesses between July and October of 2018.

Rauda has been convicted in the past for weapons-related offenses, but could face life in prison if convicted on his current charges.

After the final shooting, Beaudette's family sued LA County saying the sheriff's department failed to warn the public about Rauda's earlier attacks in the same park. When Beaudette was killed, the department says it was aware of at least seven unsolved shootings near Malibu Creek State Park, which have since been attributed to Rauda. The family is seeking at least $90 million in damages.

In earlier court appearances Rauda has been kept restrained in a chair, even forced to wear a face shield to prevent him from spitting on others. It is unclear if the court will force him to be restrained at his next appearance.

Following the brawl, Rauda's trial was delayed until May 5.
