DEAN POTTER, THE KING OF EXTREME IN YOSEMITE DIES IN WINGSUIT BASE JUMPING CRASH

Always in search of the "tip of the spear", Potter did things his way....walking the thinnest of lines.

One of the Mavericks of Yosemite has died in Yosemite Valley. Dean Potter, a climber and base jumper famous for his extremely difficult ropeless climbs and his base jumping exploits took off with a wingsuit with a fellow adventurer on Taft Point on the South rim of Yosemite Valley saturday night. They reportedly crashed into one of Yosemite’s granite walls and fell to the valley floor. Their bodies were recovered this morning...

Dean was one of a kind. One of the greatest and most extreme of all of Yosemite’s great climbers. I think Potter would be on the Mt. Rushmore of Yosemite climbing...I had the pleasure of seeing him fly past me on a route a few years ago....ropeless and shirtless. He had an amazing ability to climb incredibly difficult climbing routes knowing that if he slipped....he would surely perish.

Dean Potter was 43.
