Meet an “Amazing” With Her Very Own Asteroid--A Star For A Star
Aretha Franklin empowered women all ages, ethnicities and all walks of life.

Aretha Franklin, who passed recently at 76, was an artist who claimed the respect she made so wonderfully famous in her song “Respect,” which empowers women of all ages, all ethnicities and all walks of life to this day. Her long musical career, which began with her singing solos in Church at the tender age of 10, exploded into fame when she was a mere 19, at which time she was named as a "new-star female vocalist" in Down Beat magazine. Then came many hit recordings, live performances and worldwide recognition, including Aretha being awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2005.
When she was inducted into the GMA Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 2012, Aretha was described as "the voice of the civil rights movement, the voice of black America" and a "symbol of black equality." But the one thing you may not know about Aretha, and that I find totally amazing, is that an asteroid was named in her honor in 2014; would you believe 249516 Aretha! A star for a star, how fitting.
