Meet an “Amazing” Whose Keen Eye Behind the Camera Never Falters

She is the first female director bestowed the coveted Academy Honorary Award by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Agnes Varda, 89, without doubt one of the most innovative directors of the French New Wave film movement, has spent her life behind the camera focusing on documentary realism, feminist issues and social commentary. Her latest project is a 2017 documentary co-directed with 34-year-old French street artist and photographer known as "JR."

A world traveler, Agnes used film to comment on life in California, inspired by the time she spent in Los Angeles in the ‘60s. She was honored by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in 2013 with an exhibition called "Agnes Varda in Californialand." She was the first woman to receive the prestigious cinema award Palme d’Or in France, and in 2017, the first female director bestowed the coveted Academy Honorary Award by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
