NCAA Tennis Tournament Run Ends in Round of 16 for Pepperdine's Fanselow
The sophomore loses after first- and second-round upsets.

The 2010-11 tennis season came to an end Friday in Palo Alto for sophomore Sebastian Fanselow. He lost in the third round of the NCAA championship singles tournament to Tennys Sandgren of Tennessee. Fanselow beat two top-20 ranked opponents to reach the Round of 16, including a first-round victory over second-ranked Alex Domijan of Virginia.

After two spectacular three-set wins over top-20 ranked opponents, Sebastian Fanselow of the Pepperdine men’s tennis team was unable to put another "W" behind his name. His run at the NCAA Singles Championship came to a close, with a loss to Tennys Sandgren of Tennessee in the Round of 16.

Fanselow (Essen, Germany) opened his first NCAA singles championship run with perhaps his biggest win of season, eliminating No. 2-ranked Alex Domijan, 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 in the opening round.
The second round saw the sophomore Wave, ranked No. 28 in the Campbell/ITA Collegiate Rankings, defeat No. 19 John Peers, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.

The matchup between Fanselow and Sandgren proved to be a balanced one, as just one break decided the first set, while the second was determined in the tiebreaker. The final score went in favor of Sandgren, 6-4, 7-6 (4).
Despite the loss, Fanselow became Pepperdine’s 78th All-American in program history for reaching the round of 16. He concludes his sophomore campaign with a singles record of 27-11.
In addition to being an All-American, Fanselow was also an All-West Coast Conference singles and doubles first team selection, ITA Southwest Regional Champion and Pepperdine Athlete of the Year.
