Rambla Pacifico Opens in Malibu

The road that has been closed since 1984 opens to local residents at a celebration on Sunday morning.

After a nearly 28-year wait, Rambla Pacifico Road is now connected to Pacific Coast Highway. Local residents and past and present city leaders gathered on Sunday morning at the entrance gate for the official dedication of the private access route. It will give Rambla Pacifico residents a significantly shorter trip to reach their homes, and more importantly allow emergency vehicles to reach the neighborhood quickly.

Rambla Pacifico's connection to PCH was cut off in 1984 when a landslide damaged a section of the road. This meant what should have been a four-minute trip for area residents to access and leave their homes became a 15-minute adventure of twists and turns. Years of public hearings, legal disputes and various setbacks turned what was supposed to be a temporary problem into a nearly three-decade epic quest.

The 1,800-foot-long access route was privately funded by the homeowners for approximately $4 million. The people who spoke at the ceremony acknowledged the many people who contributed to the completion of the road, including neighborhood activist David Kagon, who died in 2008. A dedication to the lawyer and tireless advocate of the road project will soon appear on the entrance gate.
