Sharks Volleyball Wins Regular Season Home Finale

The Malibu High School girls varsity volleyball team will begin postseason play on Tuesday.

Some seasons are just special, and the  girls varsity volleyball team is having one of those seasons. The Sharks have beaten every team twice except for rival Grace Brethren. Nothing has gone unnoticed—the tremendous friendship, camaraderie and heart of the team. It was a great regular season that will go down as one of the best, if not the best, years for a Sharks girls varsity volleyball squad.

The nine seniors—who will be leaving as leaders, athletes and winners—played their final regular season home match on Tuesday against Santa Clara. The match was a hard-fought 3-0 (25-23, 25-11, 25-14) victory for the Sharks.

The first game was a seesaw battle with Malibu finishing on top in a close one. The Sharks stepped it up to their usual level of play in the second game, and easily defeated Santa Clara. Game three was a exhibition of class, as head coach Carlos Gray started all the seniors. He also circulated the players so every senior got to showcase their talents. Gray showed what high school sports should be, putting the players first and winning second.

The girls played hard to pull out the win for Gray and each other. Tears flowed as these girls ended their final regular season home game. Parents cried, the girls cried and Gray smiled while shedding a tear.

"Winning is awesome, but this special team reminded me that sports are about building character," Gray said. "Even as a coach, it's great to be reminded to do the right thing, count on friends and teammates and, most of all, to do things well and be happy."

He continued, "I really want to thank these girls for a special year and I want to thank this great group of parents for their support. This year was so great, I just may retire from coaching. You really can't beat this year and I want to finish on a high note. Let's see what happens in the playoffs. Maybe there is just one more lesson for me this year. It's a year of lifetime memories."

Malibu finishes the regular season tonight at Fillmore. The CIF playoff pairings will be announced on Sunday. The Sharks' first postseason match will take place on Tuesday.
