Manhattan Beach Passes Ordinance To Ban 'Shared Mobility Devices'
The urgency ordinance was approved to allow the City time to come up with regulations while keeping pedestrians safe.

MANHATTAN BEACH, CA – Manhattan Beach City Council approved an urgency ordinance prohibiting the use of "Shared Mobility Devices" within city limits on Tuesday. It's effective immediately.
The City defines a Shared Mobility Device as: "any wheeled device (other than an automobile or motorcycle) that is powered by a motor; is accessed by an on-demand portal (i.e. smartphone application, membership card or similar method); is operated by a private entity that owns, manages, and maintains devices for shared use by members of the public and is available to members of the public in unstaffed, self-service locations, except those locations which are designated by the City of Manhattan Beach."
It is now illegal to, park, leave standing, leave lying, abandon, or otherwise place a shared mobility device on public property or in the public's right of way anywhere within the City of Manhattan Beach. It's also now illegal to operate a shared mobility device in a public right-of-way or on public property anywhere within city limits.

The purpose of this ordinance is provide time for the City to develop a comprehensive set of regulations regulating such devices, while keeping pedestrians safe.
