MANHATTAN BEACH, CA — The city of Manhattan Beach declared a local emergency Monday, describing it as a precaution taken in line with countywide measures responding to ongoing protests and civil unrest.

The emergency declaration includes the same 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew that is in effect across Los Angeles County. It also authorizes police to enforce the curfew by arresting those who break it, with violations punishable as a misdemeanor.

Protests have been ongoing for nearly a week in the aftermath of the police killing of George Floyd, who died in Minneapolis May 25 after a white police officer kneeled on his neck for more than eight minutes as Floyd pleaded for air.
