Manhattan Beach School Wins Top Prize At Solar Cup Boat Race
Mira Costa High School in Manhattan Beach won first place in the rookie division as well as "hottest-looking boat" contests.

LOS ANGELES, CA — Teams from Riverside and Manhattan Beach won the top trophies at the 2017 Solar Cup boat race at Lake Skinner Sunday.
The Metropolitan Water District said 43 teams from high schools across Southern California competed in its contest, where students build and race 16-foot-long boats powered only by the sun.
Riverside Poly High School from Riverside won the first place trophy in the veterans' division, followed by Oxford Academy from Cypress and Calabasas High School in the next two places.

In the rookie division, Mira Costa High School in Manhattan Beach won first place.
Mira Costa and NuView Bridge Early College High High School from Rancho California won the "hottest-looking boat" contests.

The race consisted of a two-hour endurance race, followed by 90-minute, 1.6 kilometer race using solar-charged batteries only.
