Manhattan Beach Talks About More Campus Security Spending

Police Chief Derrick Abell, along with the City Council and school board detailed how exactly they recommend the district spend the money.

MANHATTAN BEACH, CA – One month ago, the city set aside $1 million towards school security measures. Now, Manhattan Beach Police Chief Derrick Abell, along with the City Council and school board detailed how exactly they recommend the district spend the money. The city and school district officials are looking at purchasing perimeter fencing around four schools in Manhattan Beach, along with new radios, cell phone boosters, and security cameras – they will also be revisiting visitor sign-in procedures, according to The Beach Reporter.

Approximately $1.4 million will be added to the budget for the new security initiatives already allocated under Measure C, a $114 million ballot measure approved by voters in November 2016, Dawnalyn Murakawa-Leopard, deputy superintendent, told The Beach Reporter. The district needs $400,000 to cover the remainder after the city's $1 million contribution.

Police Chief Abell said you have to look at it from the perspective of someone trying to come onto a campus, asking "What would be the easiest access? Who’s watching the entry points? Do you have someone manning or is it a door that opens or closes based on some sort of device?”
