UPDATED: Mira Costa Declared Safe after Bomb Threat

Manhattan Beach police are investigating. Parents and guardians were asked to pick up their students after classes were cancelled.

MANHATTAN BEACH-CA--Mira Costa High School has been cleared after a bomb threat resulted in the cancellation of classes for the day while police from around the region conducted a painstaking search of the campus.

The threat was telephoned to the office of the school, at 701 S. Peck Ave., about 8:15 a.m., said Stephanie Martin of the Manhattan Beach Police Department.

Although the caller, who was described as male, did not provide specifics as to time and/or a reason for the threat, school officials canceled classes for the day. Parents/Guardians were advised to pick up their student and the entire campus was cleared in less than 40 minutes.

Police K-9 Teams from all over the South Bay responded to provide assistance for the extensive campus search, according to Martin. Upon thoroughly searching rooms, buildings, halls and outlying areas, the campus was cleared of any suspicious items.

The “non-specific” threat prompted authorities to evacuate the school and cancel classes for the day as of 9:30 a.m., Martin said.

“As you know, we received an anonymous and vague bomb threat via phone this morning at Mira Costa High School, and we have evacuated students and staff from all classrooms,” Martin said during the evacuation. “In an abundance of caution, MBPD is preparing to search the entire campus, room by room. Conducting a thorough search of every room on the campus will take a significant amount of time. As a result, we will cancel classes for the remainder of the day. ... Your children are safe. ...”

Investigators from Manhattan Beach Police Department are actively working this case for the purpose of identifying the suspect caller, added Martin.
