Powdery Envelope Forces Evacuation of Manhattan Beach Legislator's Office

Updated: An envelope containing a powdery substance was found in the mail today at the Torrance office of Assemblyman David Hadley, prompting an evacuation of the building before it was determined the substance posed no threat.

The envelope was delivered about 11:30 a.m. to the office in the 23200 block of Hawthorne Boulevard, said Torrance police Sgt. Paul Kranke.

The building was evacuated, and a sheriff’s hazardous-materials team was summoned to the scene to help determine if the substance was toxic, Kranke said.

Sarah Wilfong, district director for the Republican Hadley, told the Daily Breeze the envelope was delivered by a letter carrier to the second-floor office, and a granular white substance was seen.

“None of us actually touched the powder itself,” Wilfong said. “We just walked out of the room.”

Kranke said it’s unclear what the powder was, but it was determined to be no threat, and authorities gave the all clear about 2:45 p.m.

“It could be dust powder,” Kranke said.
