Quake Strikes Four Miles Off City Coast

The South Bay experienced its second earthquake in less than 15 hours just before 5 p.m. Monday evening.

The 3.7 magnitude temblor was centered four miles off the coast of Hermosa Beach, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries. More than 3,000 people reported feeling the quake to the USGS's online Did You Feel It? service.

Dave Shenbaum, battalion chief for the Manhattan Beach Fire Department, said local crews conducted a customary "quick windshield survey" within the first 15 to 20 minutes following the quake.

"We get out there to check the area for any possible damage and just to let the public know that everything is OK," Shenbaum said. The only calls the fire station received were from residents curious to know whether there had been an earthquake, he added.

The late afternoon shaker followed another 3.5-magnitude quake that struck three miles off the coast in the Santa Monica Bay at 2:17 this morning. The early morning quake was followed by three small aftershocks. More than 4,000 people reported feeling the intital temblor, which was strongest in the Westside and South Bay areas.
