South Bay by Jackie Pandemic Survival Guide June 11, 2020

The South Bay by Jackie Weekend Guide offers comprehensive coverage of the greater South Bay area.

I again have to emphasis that many events are being planned and announced with just a few days’ notice. There’s not much I can do except post the information to my website and social media platforms as quickly as possible and hope that people see it. There were a couple of important virtual events earlier this week that I didn’t receive in time to include in last Thursday’s Weekend Guide but I hope some of you learned of them and were able to attend. As you’ve no doubt heard, more and more businesses are re-opening with restrictions in place, but it will still be a while before things return to ‘normal’. I’ve already received word that most of the big summer events will not take place: the Riviera Summer Festival, El Segundo Art Walk, all the Fourth of July events, many of the annual fundraisers and others. So, it’s going to be a different kind of summer this year, a bit more intimate likely, with small groups of family and friends getting together for BBQs, birthday celebrations and beach days. I’ve begun to venture out some and see a few friends, and all I keep thinking is, how ironic is it that we’re still under stay-at-home orders while experiencing the best spring weather EVAH! Clear skies and 90-degree temps in June??? I hope you’re able to get out and enjoy it!
ESMoA presents Experience 26: OOMO, a solo exhibition of photographic artist Nicole Maloney. The OOMO digital cube is a conceptual interactive art sculpture depicting human oneness and our symbiotic association with technology. OOMO asks the world to stand in awe instead of in judgment of one another. OOMO| OUT OF MANY ONE: Maloney is on a mission to capture every face in the world on the OOMO digital cube to prove that out of many, we are one. One humanity. Our differences are vast, but our similarities are colossal. OOMO confronts man’s symbiotic relationship with technology by broadcasting each selfie on both a communal and global scale. OOMO represents humanity’s moral imperative: to seek peace and tolerance so that every man, woman and child will see the other as they see themselves. Each side of the cube is divided into nine squares depicting one human face made up of nine different people representing five aspects of humanity: race, religion, gender, socio-economic status and sexual orientation. The sixth side is nine mirrored panels; everyone interacting with the cube becomes a part of OOMO. The OOMO digital cube sculpture will be installed in the ESMoA Entrance foyer and visible online via a live streaming video feed. Users from all over the world will be able to send their selfie through a webapp located on the ESMoA website. Upon uploading their selfie, users will see themselves appear for a few seconds on all sides of the OOMO digital cube before pixelating away into nine squares and becoming one with the world’s selfies. Experience 26: OOMO launched online on June 4, 2020 at http://www.esmoa.org and will be on view until September 26, 2020. Visit the Experience 26: OOMO page at
https://esmoa.org/experience/oomo/. OOMO Webapp: https://me.oomocube.com/. For additional Information about the OOMO project, please refer to Nicole’s TEDx talk at

Earlier this year (before things went sideways), I made a donation to the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy Adopt-a-Goat Program. Last weekend, I had an opportunity to visit and see the goat herd at work (regretfully, I didn’t have my regular photographer for this outing, and take full credit for the not-so-great pics). Learn what the program is all about at https://www.southbaybyjackie.com/pvplc-visit-goats/. The PVPLC does amazing work, so if you want to learn more or make a donation, visit the website at https://pvplc.org/.

The Torrance Rose Float Association is raising funds with a Flower Sale. The Torrance Rose Float Association enters the City of Torrance Rose Float in the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade each year. They are a 100% volunteer non-profit organization. The Association is responsible for the parade entrance forms and fee, the design contest, working with the float builder to finalize the design and obtain tournament approval, supplying the volunteer float decorators and raising funds to cover a portion of the costs. A large portion of the costs have been provided by the City of Torrance, but due to the COVID-19 crisis, that participation is in serious doubt. There have been 65 City of Torrance floats in the Tournament of Roses Parade since 1914. The TRFA works hard to continue this long-standing community tradition. If you love the Rose Parade, you also love flowers! This fundraiser brings you quality flowers and plants for your garden along with supporting the TRFA. To check out the selection, click here. Your support is very much appreciated!
