MANHATTAN BEACH, CA – Noki Lam, a 10-year-old from Manhattan Beach, is one of 56 children selected to go on an all-expenses paid trip to Calgary, Canada to attend the Kumon Student Conference in July. Lam was chosen out of 400,000 students because he's currently studying three years above his school grade level in math, according to the press release.
Kids attending the conference from the United States, Canada, and Mexico will partake in a variety of learning activities based on team-building, critical thinking and creativity. They'll also hear from former Kumon students that have completed the program, according to the press release.
The Kumon learning program is based on ability rather than age or grade, which allows students the opportunity to study above their school grade level, according to Sung Park, vice president of materials development and instruction at Kumon North America, Inc.

“With this conference, we are able to celebrate our students’ accomplishments and inspire them to continue developing their skills through program completion and to aspire to become individuals who tackle some of the world’s challenges,” Park said.
Aside from being a stellar math student at Kumon El Segundo, Lam plays on a competitive basketball team and likes to play the violin.
