Authorities today identified a pedestrian who was struck and killed by a Los Angeles Police Department bomb squad vehicle amid extremely foggy conditions.

Dean Joseph Bucheit, 64, whose home town was unknown, died at the scene of the accident, which occurred as 12:11 a.m. Monday in the 13600 block of Culver Boulevard, said coroner’s Assistant Chief Ed Winter.

Sgt. Elizabeth Ellis of the LAPD’s West Traffic Division said the fog could have been a factor in the accident.

The officer behind the wheel of the vehicle was assigned to Los Angeles International Airport. He was on his way home when the pedestrian was fatally injured.

“He is very distraught over this accident. On all fronts this is just a tragedy,” LAPD Sgt. Barry Montgomery said Monday. “I was here earlier this morning, and I have to say that visibility (was) very poor. And in that particular section of Culver Boulevard, there are no streetlights.”
