A Beautiful Moon, Worth Repeating
The full moon Wednesday night was awe inspiring. In fact nature and our whole universe is, and it is better than any movie I think. And free!
Sometimes we can forget about the wonders all around us. Nothing anyone has written, any science fiction movie or book, has ever came close in my opinion to what we know is there, all around us. And best of all you don't need to buy a movie ticket to see it.
We had a full moon Wednesday night. Almost a harvest moon, but not quite. The Harvest Moon is the full moon that occurs closest to the autumnal equinox. So technically the harvest moon occurred in September this year, but it is almost a tie. The latest possible harvest moon in October would be Oct 11 th, so this is not a true harvest moon. And please correct me if I am wrong, I am not an astronomer, and far from a mathematician, so I could be wrong. But it doesn't really matter. It was beautiful.
Nature never ceases to amaze me. We are surrounded by wonders that can inspire us, awe inspire I would say, surprise us, fire our imagination, even boggle the mind. I remember Carl Sagan saying, "There are in fact 100 billion galaxies, each of which contain something like a 100 billion stars." It became a kind of joke to tell. "Billions upon billions of stars,...." But just thinking about this, and how much we can see, it is true, truth is stranger than any fiction, and much more incredible. And real.

Seeing the moon tonight rise through the ancient oak trees and photographing it was an incredible experience. And the stars in the sky and earth under my feet. Obviously words fail me in describing how it made me feel. But it did, once again, put things in perspective and rejuvenate my spirit.
I hope this doesn't sound corny or strange, but I am absolutely in awe of it all. It gives me faith. Faith that the universe is much larger, wiser and mysterious than any of us, or anything we can imagine. And ultimately in charge. If I can, and I do, believe in these billions upon billions of galaxies all around us, and that space may never end, all personal faiths aside, I can believe anything, and do. It does have a purpose, even if we may not know what it is.
