CHP: 2-Year-Old Was in Car Hit By Motorcyclist Going 100 MPH

Investigators are still trying to find out why the Motorcyclist fled from police.

A motorcyclist who allegedly fled police in Martinez on Tuesday afternoon and crashed into multiple cars about four miles down the road was the only person who suffered serious injuries in the crash, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The motorcyclist, a 31-year-old Oakley man, was hospitalized with multiple broken bones after he crashed into the back of a Dodge and was thrown from his bike near the state Highway 4 and Interstate Highway 680 interchange, CHP officials said.

He had allegedly fled from a Martinez police officer on Highway 4.

The officer spotted the rider speeding east on the highway at about 3:45 p.m. and tried to pull him over as he was approaching Pine Street, Martinez police said.

But the rider wouldn’t stop and fled from the officer at 100 mph. The officer called off the pursuit when the motorcyclist entered heavy traffic.

As the officer pulled over to the right to exit the highway, he saw an accident happen down the road.

As he approached I-680, the motorcyclist hit the right side of a Nissan, sideswiped a Lexus and then flew from the bike as he crashed into the back of the Dodge, according to the CHP.

The police officer stopped to give the motorcyclist aid before he was taken to the hospital. While he is expected to survive, the motorcyclist is still recovering in the hospital with serious injuries, CHP Officer John Fransen said today.

“We’re just concerned that he heals from that and we’ll see from there what charges will be filed with the district attorney’s office,” Fransen said.

The only other people injured in the crash were the driver and passenger of the sideswiped Lexus, who complained of pain to their neck, back and shoulder, CHP officials said. They were traveling with a 2-year-old child in the backseat who was uninjured.

Investigators are still working to determine why the motorcyclist fled from officers.
