Officer Trapped Inside Getaway Car Shoots FoodMaxx Robbery Suspect: Police

A police officer shot a man suspected of holding up an Antioch FoodMaxx while trapped inside the suspect's getaway car.

CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA — An attempted armed robbery at a Food Maxx escalated into an officer-involved shooting Friday after a man rammed a patrol car and trapped an officer in his get-away vehicle, police said.

According to the Antioch Police Department, officers were dispatched at 5:16 a.m. to the 4500 block of Lone Tree Way after receiving the report of an armed robbery in progress. The caller reported that one of the suspects had threatened him with a firearm.

Backup officers arrived to find the suspect had rammed an Antioch police patrol car, trapping the officer inside. An officer struggled with the driver but was pulled into the suspect's vehicle. The suspect started speeding away, striking both a patrol car and a nearby store before fleeing with an officer trapped inside, police said.

The officer ordered him to stop, but the driver refused. When the suspect continued to ignore his repeated commands to stop, the officer fired his weapon, striking the driver, according to the Antioch Police Department. The suspect then got out of the vehicle and fled on foot until other officers caught and arrested him. The wounded suspect and the officer were not seriously injured.

The officers involved in the incident have been placed on paid administrative leave according to department policy.

The Antioch Police Department's Investigations Bureau and Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office are now investigating the incident according to protocol.

The Brentwood Police Department, Pittsburg Police Department, Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office, and the California Highway Patrol assisted Antioch police during the incident.
