Woman Killed in Crash Following Police Chase ID'd as Leona Moreno

Moreno, who was from Rodeo, was thrown from from the car after it crashed into a utility pole. She died at the scene.

A woman who died in a car that struck a utility pole while being pursued by police Thursday night in Pittsburg was identified by the Contra Costa County coroner’s office as 25-year-old Leona Moreno.

At 10:47 p.m., Antioch police officers were working on a stolen vehicle assignment when they spotted the Lexus with Moreno inside it speeding on East 14th Street.

Police chased after the Lexus as it continued onto the Pittsburg-Antioch Highway, police said.

The driver apparently lost control of the car just after passing Loveridge Road and struck a pole.

After unsuccessful life-saving measures, Moreno was pronounced dead at the scene. She was thrown from the car during the crash.

Police had originally said Moreno, a Rodeo resident, was from Pittsburg. She had two men with her in the car, Antioch residents ages 21 and 26.

They were both transported to a hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening, according to police.
